Swipe to see how Noah renovated their dream house

The movie introduced us to a poor country boy named Noah, as he meets Allie, a girl from a wealthy family who spends the summer in his hometown on Seabrook Island, South Carolina. And while they are all quite swoon-worthy, none of them can compete with The Notebook, the 2004 movie starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams that became one of the most heartwarming love stories of our time. You can't just make "If you're a bird, I'm a bird" happen — that is, unless you're Allie and Noah from The Notebook.

It’s a private home, so I’m sure I don’t need to remind you not to disturb the residents. With it getting so much screen time you may have been wondering to yourself, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’? ” Like many great films, the filmmakers shot on location in South Carolina. When the house is ready, it’s everything she has dreamed about and more. He puts it on sale, and people flock to the plantation offering him huge sums of money. But Noah has no intention to sell the house — he just wants Allie to notice it.

After years of making repairs from flood damage, the gardens have reopened and are ready for you to take your own romantic boat ride among the lily pads. Thanks to its charming historic downtown, antebellum homes, and idyllic waterfront vistas, it's no surprise that Charleston is a popular location for TV shows and movies to film. But one of the most iconic films to use Charleston as its backdrop is undoubtedly The Notebook. While Nicholas Sparks originally set the book in New Bern, North Carolina, the movie places Noah and Allie in Seabrook, South Carolina, a small town about an hour south of Charleston.

The charming historic downtown Charleston, SC is a popular location for TV shows and movies. My husband and I decided to do a road trip to visit this romantic town and the spots where “The Notebook” was filmed. One of the more heartbreaking scenes in the film is when Noah returns from war and sees his former flame, Allie, on a visit to downtown Charleston. After following her down the street, he watches as she meets her fiancé Lon in a restaurant. High Cotton is a real restaurant in Charleston that still looks the way it did in the movie.

The tour inside the house is included with the admission and it’s worth checking it out. While the most iconic scene in the film is Noah and Allie kissing in the rain, unable to deny their love story isn't over, a close second is their afternoon on a rowboat before it starts raining. The Cypress Gardens have been a sought after destination since 1932 for tourists and locals.

If you're interested in ever bringing your romantic dreams to life, a la The Notebook, you might want to start saving now. The folks at La Jolla gave estimates for similarly iconic movie and TV homes, and the results might shock you. "It was bizarre and a little surreal," she said to seeing her family home depicted on film. Noah spends a year rejuvenating the home, which can be found in the real life Martins Point Plantation, in the aftermath of his soul-crushing split with the wealthy local girl. Number 204 Martins Point Road has always been a glorious property, just as it was in the 'after' scenes when the Allie fell back into Noah's arms. The house that Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) renovated for his paramour Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) in The Notebook movie was an emblem for chasing ghosts of the past and the result of a some clever cinema trickery.

The College of Charleston was used as Allie’s New York college (“Sarah Lawrence College”). The scene above is when Allie sees Lon Hammond, the guy she helped while she was volunteering as a nurse’s aide in a hospital for wounded soldiers, and the guy who soon become her fiancee. Some of our favorites include the Charleston Harbor Marina Resort and the Vendue Inn. We think part of the appeal was that Ryan Gosling's character renovated the dilapidated 1772 mansion just the way Rachel McAdams' character wanted. It also may have been the fact that he wrote her love letters every day for a year (swoon!) According to House Beautiful, the mansion really exists, and producers put a lot of work into its transformation throughout the film. When Noah goes off to fight in World War II and Allie becomes involved with another man, it seems like their fairy tale romance is all but dead. Head down King Street in Charleston to see the location of Allie and Noah’s first date, The American Theater. The American Theater purpose when it opened in 1942 was as Charleston’s premier movie house.

The property had a 100-year history of being an agricultural hub. A small ferry carried people and crops to the mainland, and the island had its own post office, telephone system, currency, and school. In 1989, five partners purchased the 900-acre tract to preserve the habitat and create a retreat for their families. The house is a private residence that has been in the family for decades, if not generations. It’s a sprawling southern beauty with 4,255 square feet, five bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and multiple fireplaces.

The Cotton Gin house built in the 1850s, a brick smokehouse built-in 1750, the beautiful Avenue of Oaks planted in 1743, and more can be seen while visiting the Boone Hall Plantation. Scenes of the exterior of Allie's family's summer house were filmed at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. The plantation, which has been a working farm for more than 300 years, is open to the public for tours of its home, grounds, and the cabins of its enslaved laborers. You'll recognize it instantly upon turning onto the mossy oak-lined driveway and seeing the iron gate in front of the house that Noah rams his truck into.

There are many Peerspace waterfront properties just like this, so you’ll have no problem finding your own “Notebook”-style dream destination. Alright, back to reality where handsome men don’t renovate houses to make our childhood dreams come true. There are many unforgettable moments from the Notebook — Allie and Noah lying on the road, their chats in the nursing home, and that kiss, of course.

The sprawling plantation home that Noah spends a year of his life renovating is a symbol of the ways in which a belief in love and destiny can guide a person’s life. Noah once showed the shabby old house to Allie during their summer of love in 1932, vowing that he’d one day fix it up and live in it. As an adult, Noah uses the first large sum of money he comes into in order to buy the house and the surrounding property. He works on the house and the land around it day in and day out, often pressing on until midnight or later. Whether or not he admits it to himself, Noah is building a house in which he hopes he can one day build a life with Allie. Allie is the “ghost” of Noah’s past, and as he completes work on the house, he turns to hard work to outrun her memory while also building a life that continues to hold space for the possibility that Allie will return to him.

Noah’s plan works out, and Allie comes to see him at the plantation. Not sure if it was Ryan Gosling’s face that convinced her to leave her fiancé for Noah or that gorgeous house he rebuilt for her, but it was definitely a persuasive combo. The sweethearts part ways, and when Noah sees Allie 14 years later, she’s engaged to someone else. Noah, who’s still in love with Allie, goes a little overboard and uses all the money he set aside to make their dream come true — renovate the house on Windsor Plantation. Sparks is one of the most famous contemporary romance writers, with 11 of his bestselling novels turned into box office hits.
